>> When I left London for Asia, the persistent climber shrub that clambers all over my garden wall was still heaving with leaves. Upon my return, it had shed all that foliage to reveal its bare branches. Which is basically my cue to start hauling out the extra thick John Lewis tights (from the school uniform department obvs, the Uniqlo Heat Tech and deflate the vac packed winter coats. No it’s not actually physically freezing but there’s something comforting about easing yourself into the change of seasons and purposely layering and bulking up, in a proactive act of preparation.
As some of you might know, I’ve been working with Coach for the last two seasons, in support of Stuart Vevers’ new era at the American leather goods powerhouse. Last season’s cartoonish and candy-hued hi-jinx have become sturdier and more rugged for A/W 15-6 as his gang of American road trippers hit the highway in spongey leathers, padded out shearlings and furry sheepskins, which are now available on their newly launched e-commerce UK site as well as their New Bond Street store. These pieces of outerwear have heft about them and you feel it when you put them on and there’s something quite reassuring about all that weight – particularly with the shearling peacoat that felt like being enveloped in the garment equivalent of a bear like hug. Winter hasn’t arrived yet but as you can see from the withered trees near my house, it will be here sooner than you think. For now, I’m taking advantage of the fact that I can ease myself into all this warmth-inducing outerwear, with the benefit of the last of autumnal mildness – hence the bare legs (my head and my arms tend to feel more of the cold anyway). To borrow that infamous Game of Thrones motto… winter is coming.
